AI Receptionist Rules by State

An AI receptionist works in every state. What changes from state to state is the law on recording calls and on sales texts. Some states, like California, Florida, Massachusetts and Washington, need everyone on a call to know it is recorded; others, like Texas and New York, need one party. Each page below explains the rules for one state, with the statute linked, and shows how Awava sets things up there.

EVERY STATE

AI voices and the federal rules.

On 8 February 2024 the FCC ruled that AI-generated voices count as “artificial” under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, so calls a business places with an AI voice need the called person’s prior express consent. That ruling is about calls you place. An AI receptionist answers calls people place to you, and Awava does not use it to dial lists.

AWAVA’S DEFAULTS, EVERYWHERE

  • The greeting says when a call is recorded, in every state.
  • The AI receptionist answers calls people place to you. It does not dial lists.
  • Missed-call text back goes only to someone who just called you.
  • Replying STOP ends texts right away.
  • If a caller asks, the AI says it is an AI.
