AI Search

Reviews are search content now

A review used to persuade the person reading it. Now it also tells AI assistants what you do, where, and how well. That changes what a good review looks like.

A homeowner on a front porch at golden hour looking at a phone as a contractor truck pulls away.

Reviews have always mattered for local business. They moved you up the map, and they convinced the person comparing you to two other companies. Both of those are still true.

What is new is the third reader. When someone asks an AI assistant who to hire, the assistant reads reviews too, and it uses what they say to decide whether it can confidently recommend you, and for what.

Five stars isn’t the useful part

To a model, "Great job, highly recommend!" confirms that someone was happy. It does not say what the job was or where. Compare:

"They replaced our whole roof in Chelmsford in two days after the storm, cleaned up every nail, and the price didn’t change from the quote."

That review tells a machine the service (roof replacement), the town (Chelmsford), the context (storm damage), the speed and the pricing honesty. It is exactly the kind of detail an assistant can use to recommend that roofer for that question.

The best review for AI search reads like a one-sentence case study.

How to get more detailed reviews

  • Ask at the right moment. Right after the job is finished and the customer is happy, by text, while they are still standing in the finished room or yard.
  • Make it one tap. Send the direct review link, not "look us up on Google."
  • Prompt the detail, gently. "If you have a second, mentioning the town and what we did helps other homeowners find us." Most people are glad to.
  • Never script it or pay for it. Suggesting what to mention is fine. Writing the review, offering discounts for five stars, or gating who gets asked is against the rules and damages trust.
  • Keep them coming. Recency matters. Ten reviews this season beat forty from 2021.

Put them on your own site, properly

Most sites show two anonymous quotes in a slider. Build a real reviews page instead: the full text, the first name and last initial, the town, the date, and a link to where it was left. Mark it up so machines can read it. Then show the reviews from each town on that town’s page.

Your reviews are the most credible content you own. Treat them like content, not decoration.
